Supereruptions as a Threat to Civilizations on Earth-like Planets

چکیده

The largest explosive volcanic eruptions (supereruptions) produce >1000 km3 of ejected material and ≥1000 Mt (1015 g) of submicron atmospheric aerosols and dust. These eruptions may be capable of creating global climatic disturbances sufficient to cause severe problems for world agriculture and modern civilization. Supereruptions are estimated to occur on average about every 50,000 years, which is about twice the frequency of impacts by comets and asteroids ≥1 km diameter predicted to cause similar climatic effects. Prediction, prevention, and mitigation of global volcanic climatic disasters may be potentially more difficult than planetary protection from the threat of large impacts, so that explosive volcanism might limit the longevity of technological civilizations. c © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

Global warming as a detectable thermodynamic marker of Earth-like extrasolar civilizations: the case for a telescope like Colossus

Earth-like civilizations generate heat from the energy that they utilize. The thermal radiation from this heat can be a thermodynamic marker for civilizations. Here we model such planetary radiation on Earth-like planets and propose a strategy for detecting such an alien unintentional thermodynamic electromagnetic biomarker. We show that astronomical infrared (IR) civilization biomarkers may be...

Infrared - Your guide to Infrared and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe. The field uses many scientific disciplines and spectrometric technologies to address these important issues. While questions about life in the universe have existed as long as man has looked up at the stars, advances in science and spectrometry in the past few decades make it possible for us t...

گاه‌های آفرینشی در برخی از فرش‌های شیری فارس

The common element in the Persian Shiri carpets is lion, sometimes accompanied with Sword and full or half sun. Sword is a symbol of power & war and Sun is a symbol of Imam Ali (PBUH). In addition to lion and sun, pictures of lion-cow-attack, with their ancient history in Iranian art, are represented in Fars’ Shiri carpets in other methods. For this reason, calendar, changes of seasons & ...

An Estimate of the Age Distribution of Terrestrial Planets in the Universe:Quantifying Metallicity as a Selection Effect

Planets like the Earth cannot form unless elements heavier than helium are available. These heavy elements, or ‘metals’, were not produced in the big bang. They result from fusion inside stars and have been gradually building up over the lifetime of the Universe. Recent observations indicate that the presence of giant extrasolar planets at small distances from their host stars, is strongly corr...

On the history and future of cosmic planet formation

We combine constraints on galaxy formation histories with planet formation models, yielding the Earth-like and giant planet formation histories of the Milky Way and the Universe as a whole. In the Hubble volume (1013 Mpc3), we expect there to be ∼1020 Earth-like and ∼1020 giant planets; our own galaxy is expected to host ∼109 and ∼1010 Earth-like and giant planets, respectively. Proposed metall...
